Potters’ Culture

version française | deutsche Version

Originally the “potters” of Rwanda satisfied their needs with hunting and gathering. After their expulsion out of the forests they have begun to make pottery. To make the pottery more effective and more profitable COPORWA aspires to modernize the potter’s knowledge and skills without forgetting the traditional techniques. “Modernization in conscience of tradition” is the motto.

The potters also contribute to the cultural heritage of Rwanda in the field which is called the “fine arts”. In the whole country there are different groups exercising traditional dance and theatre. Furthermore there are lots of stories and poems which are transmitted by word of mouth from one generation to the next.

In the course of their history the potters have found the means to cure illnesses with the help of nature. Even today some potters put their trust in traditional medicine.
